IF YOU FEEL TRIGGER BY THINKING ABOUT YOUR TIME AT SCOTCH, OR THE ABUSE YOU MAY HAVE SUFFERED AS A CHILD, PLEASE PROCEED WITH CARE, AND PERHAPS CONSIDER TALKING ABOUT YOUR SITUATION WITH A COUNSELOR OR CLOSE FRIEND.
This 2019 Update is focused on Exploring Scotch Family Pastoral Care, Inter-alumni Pastoral, as well as Atheist Care (including in facebook post format), with the aim of being a form of assistance to our Classmates, when in contact with our OSCA and Scotch Family Support Network.
Q. If Classmates who have Survived (Sexual) Abuse don't find a rapport with the Scotch Psychologist, what should they do??
NB: When thinking about choosing a Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Psychotherapist, etc, the Blue Knot Foundation offers some good advice:

A. "The strongest predictor of good outcomes in psychotherapy is not the type of therapy, but rather the ability of the psychotherapist to establish a strong rapport with their clients." (see -> https:// www.blueknot.org.au/ Survivors/Support/ Resources-for-Survivors/ Finding-Care-and-Support)
(see also "Safeguarding Children..." section below)Since our Scotch 82 Social Media Adventure Together started in 2012, there has been some Questions about how we might best Give and Receive Friendship Support, as it relates to OSCA's Life Transitions Objective(s), and as coordinated along with Scotch Family Chaplaincy Services.
OSCA's Articles of Association refers to Pastoral Care, and Scotch College prioritizes Pastoral Care as part of day to day Care for Scotch's Students with OSCA providing input.
Connecting with Scotch Family Pastoral Care is best achieved by please contacting OSCA directly, or OSCA's Chaplain in Graham Bradbeer (who can also be contacted through his home church -> https://preskey.org.au/victoria/item/blackburn.html?category_id=104). Thank-you!!

OSCA's Annual Report for 2018-19 outlines how we can be a part of 1). Providing reasons to connect, 2. Providing ways to connect, and 3.) Providing opportunities to give back (see summary below).
Q. I've noticed out Classmates have been attending OSCA's Annual Dinner, and that Scotch 82 Social Media has also advertised Events and facebook Groups... How does this fit in with OSCA's Pastoral Care plans?
A. Our Social Media Initiatives aim to "Help our Classmate Re-connect, Reconcile, and Reunite with each other and our Scotch Family" fits in well with OSCA's Strategic Plan for 2020 to 2024, as we look ahead to our next 10 Year Reunion, in 2022.
Below is a (draft) Overview of how our Scotch 82 face 2 face Support is shaping up to fit in with OSCA Pastoral Care AND The Presbyterian Church of Australia Ministries, as we head towards our next 10 Year Reunion, in 2022.
If you'd like the opportunity to discuss Scotch 82 face 2 face Support, in a Private setting, as we look ahead to 2020, 2021, and 2022, then please join our Scotch 82 Active Admins Group by getting in touch with Mark Learner, our Scotch 82 Active Admins Membership Admin.

Q. In addition to the Scotch College Principals Apology, what Ministry Help is the Presbyterian Church making available to those Classmates who are still struggling with Sexual Abuse, or other Abuses, from our time at Scotch?
A. Presbyterian Church Acknowledges Responsibility... We believe our Classmates and desire to do all we can to help them find healing and peace, using our Scotch 82 Social Media Guidelines!
"Historical abuse reporting and resolution - the PCV welcomes historical complaints and understands that the denomination has a moral responsibility in such cases and seeks to work with complainants towards resolution and healing" (quote -> http:// www.safechurchpcv.org.au/ services/)
Classmates may want to consider speaking directly to the Safe Church Unit about (online & face to face) Support/Recovery Groups. (contact details -> http:// www.safechurchpcv.org.au/ new)

Q. I've been receiving Invitations to come along to a Scotch 82 Annual Get-together, what's that all about? (see also Scotch 82 Events -> https://www.facebook.com/pg/Scotch1982/events/)
A. This post to our Scotch 82 facebook page breaks down what our Annual Get-togethers have been about...

Q. What is Scotch 82 Peer Group Support?
A. Scotch 82 Year Peer Group Support is about Peer Group Friendships developing as a result of our Scotch 82 Year Group Support Initiatives.
Peers benefit from Care & Support whether they are giving or receiving it, similar to that occurring at our Scotch 82 Annual Get-togethers.
Our Classmates have also re-established friendships from our Scotch School Days as well as making new friends!
Additionally, Peer Group Get-togethers may occur based around a common interest, resulting from being in touch using Scotch 82 Social Media and/or OSCAnet resources.
Peer Group Pastoral Care may be mutually offered and reciprocated, with or without outside assistance.
Q. Who influences the Social Media Pastoral Care that our Classmates may need to help them feel supported, by providing some input into that we do as a Year Group?
A. During 2018, we have been reviewing how we can best support each other, and at the same time fit in with other Scotch Family's initiatives, as well. Our OSCA Honorary Chaplain, Graham Bradbeer, is on facebook, and is the Minister at Gardenia St. Presbyterian Blackburn Church.
OSCA's Executive Director - Scott Montgomery - is also available to chat with Old Boys, and can be contacted on Social Media, and Scott has been also providing valuable input on how we can best fit in with OSCA's and our Scotch Family Support initiatives.

Our Scotch 82 Support Influencers, the OSCA Collegians, have provided some thought and input into how best to support Scotch Students, and with Scotch Family day preparations!
Good effort OSCA Collegians, who have received a "Special Thanks" from OSCA (see -> https://www.facebook.com/
Q. Do OSCA (Collegians) Support Year Groups having an Annual Get-together, as a form of Scotch Family Pastoral Care, as a kind of Alternative Reunion?
A. No! OSCA (Collegians) do not support Year Group Annual Get-togethers in the form of an Alternative Reunion, but clearly "Informal Friendship Groups" is something that is a part of OSCA's Strategic Plan for 2020 to 2024 (see the OSCA Annual Report "Councilors Report" diagram above).

Our Annual Get-together has been about providing a face 2 face opportunity to help our Classmates struggling to get along our 10 Year Reunions, and has helped to support the formation of Informal Friendship Groups, as we head to our next 10 Year Reunion in 2022.
It's also been a good opportunity to discuss our Scotch Family Support Network, and to encourage ideas about what else we can do to assist our Classmates as they "Reconnect, Reconcile, and Reunite", by getting involved OSCA's Activities, as described in OSCA's Annual Reports (see an example below).

As part of our year's Support & Care approach, on both our Transitional Scotch College Class of 1982 & Scotch 82 facebook website pages, we have identified a need for our year's Atheists to feel Equal to Theists.
Equal Opportunities means considering our Scotch Family's definition of Pastoral Care for Atheists, and perhaps in particular OSCA's Plan for "OSCA Collegians" to hear from Scotch Family Atheists about their needs.
An interesting short segment is linked below that explores Atheist Care, by taking a look at our Australian Defence Forces consideration of 'Atheist Chaplaincy', and whether this initiative is something ADF Chaplains currently undertake as part of their role.
image + segment -> http://www.abc.net.au/ radio/programs/worldtoday/ atheist-chaplain-champions- the-need-for-pastoral-care -in-the-adf/10070470
Our OSCA Honorary Chaplain, Graham Bradbeer, is also a good person to chat to about Atheist Care, having now had over 35 years of experience offering Scotch Family Support Networking advice.
Exploring Inter-Alumni Pastoral Care...
Q. Do OSCA pay much attention to what other Old Boys and Old Girls Associations are up to, and their "Pastoral Care" initiatives.
A. In this year Annual Report, OSCA's President (re-elect), Scotch 84's James Douglas states:
"We have also been looking at what other APS alumni
associations do to create engagement opportunities
for their own communities, and we will consider
adopting any of their ideas that we believe will benefit
the OSCA community."

In 2019, Exploring Inter-Alumni Pastoral Care may have benefited some Scotch 82 lads who are interested in how Members of the Associated Public Schools of Victoria Alumni address Pastoral Care, including the idea of 5 year/10 year Reunions, Annual Dinners, and/or Get-togethers.
The Old Wesley Collegians Association (OWCA) and OSCA have lots in common, and we might remember the WWII link between our two Families, where Wesley and Scotch shared facilities for the sake of the war effort (more here -> http://wesleycollege.net/ Our-Community/ Archives-and-Collections/ Wesley-at-war.aspx)
OWCA have a Alumni Reunions and Event Schedule too (link -> http:// www.wesleycollege.net/ Our-Community/Alumni/ Reunions.aspx), which features our Annual Golf Day Cup!
Scotch was the winner of the 2018 Clayton-Wagstaff Cup, as captured below with OSCA's Scott Montgomery -> https://www.facebook.com/ oldscotchboys/photos/ a.1046807142043763/ 1804732496251220/ ?type=3&theater

Haileybury, and Old Haileyburians, participate in the APS Sport fixtures, and along with current Scotch Students and Old Boys, get involved in a number of forums that benefit the Inter-Alumni Community. (see http:// www.apssport.org.au/)
6 Campuses (Keysborough, Brighton, Berwick, City, Beijing-China, Darwin) help make Haileybury the largest school in Australia, using a Parallel Education model with separate Colleges for Boys and Girls, and co-instructional learning opportunities.
Like other members of the Associated Public Schools of Victoria, Haileybury has a strong (Christian) heritage of prioritizing Pastoral Care, with plenty of Social Skills development opportunities between students and the greater community -> https:// www.haileybury.com.au/ about/community.
Inter-Alumni Pastoral Care opportunities between Haileybury and Scotch, as well as other APS Past Student Alumi, help to build each other's Family/Community in mutual Christian love, care, support, friendships, hospitality, etc, especially when Alumni Reps can get-together to learn from each other!

During APS sports Events,or for Inter-school Debates, etc, there has always been opportunities to talk with St Kevin's Students and Teachers, become friends, explore the school grounds, and grow spiritually together!
“Father God,by the power of Holy Spirit, please comfort and heal all victims of abuse, for you are our great Healer,to your glory,in the name of Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,Amen”
Let's also hope when the St Kevin's Family, more so all Families, visit Scotch College, Melbourne, and our Scotch Family Social Media sites, they too feel their welfare and healing is our desire, and acknowledged responsibility!

Old Boys of Scotch College, Perth, Founded the Old Scotch Collegians in 1904, and today have over 15,000 members worldwide.
Like our OSCA of Melbourne, OSC use Social Media and a well thought through technology enhanced Mentoring Program (http://apbeta.ptly.com/wa/ scotch/#mentoringprogramme) initiatives to assist alumni stay connected in Old Boy life, and this helps provide valuable opportunities to be of service to their old School, peers, and greater Scotch Family.
OSC see great value in supporting Year Groups to attend Reunions with Social Media Groups linked to their facebook page, which provides a means for easy reach, reconnecting, discussion, and ongoing contact, just as Scotch 82 has found benefit in doing with our Year's facebook page linked groups, as we head towards our next 10 Year Reunion, in 2022.

Eton College was founded in 1440 by King Henry VI as a (Christian) Religious Institution, is an Independent Boys senior school with 1,313 boarding only students aged between the ages of 13 and 18, is a sister institution to King's College, Cambridge, "and now welcomes members of all faiths and of none".
"In all of their academic and pastoral relationships, boys learn to talk comfortably and openly with adults..." (quotes from https:// www.etoncollege.com/)
Eton has 25 Houses, with House Masters and Dames, Deputies, and Assistants. There are also Doctors and Nurses on Campus to look after the Boys medical needs, and Pastoral Care from Anglican and Roman Catholic chaplains, as well as Jewish, Muslim and Hindu tutors (with Psychological support offered by the school counsellor, if need be).
One of our (1982) Physics Teachers, Dr Sydney Boydell spent a year at Eton as a Master in 1997, quickly learning there are many things distinctly Etonian, but also noted in an article for Great Scot, that: "Like Eton, a Scotch education offers its students broad and challenging opportunities - academic, cultural and sporting." (see -> https:// www.scotch.vic.edu.au/ greatscot/1997decGS/ P12SydB.htm)
The Old Etonian Association (OEA) was founded in 1897 to help keep Old Boys in touch with each other and to support their school. Like Old Scotch Collegians, Old Etonians support a Development Program of Bursaries and Scholarships, alongside Building and Facilities related projects, and have an OEA Office and Museum.
OEA has a members only website, utilizes facebook and linkedIn, sends out an Online newsletter and Magazines received by post, as well as holds Year Group Reunions to help support Old Boys' Pastoral Care, all whilst encouraging active involvement in the wider community locally, and globally.
Old Etonians participate in numerous Mens Health related Activities available through 37 Clubs and Societies for The Arts, Sports (Soccer, Shooting, Rugby, Rowing, Polo, Golf, Cross County, Cricket), Classic Cars, Legal, Medical, Entrepreneurs, Hunters, Scientists, a "OE Mental Health Society", as well as many others, catering to areas of interest and need, within the Eton Family (see -> https:// www.etoncollege.com/ OESocieties).
Eton has a number of facilities available for hire, like the Chapel, Theatre, Rowing Club, Concert Hall, Athletic's Center for Conference and Events, and Queens Eyot (an Island on the Thames) for Wedding Receptions and Special Occasions (see -> http:// www.queenseyot.co.uk/).

Residing in South Yarra, along side Melbourne's picturesque Yarra River, Melbourne High School, affectionately known as the "Castle On The Hill", is for boys only between Years 9 to 12.
The Melbourne High School Old Boys Association (see website -> https://mhsoba.asn.au/) was founded in 1907, and has 5 Year Reunions, as well as encourages facebook group discussions for Students and Old Boys alike.
The official MHSOBA offers "Student Membership whilst they are at school".
Membership includes access to a "Class of..." facebook group even before graduation, and a very impressive Mentoring program that starts whilst Young Old Boys are Students, that ties in with campus House based Pastoral Care and Support.
MHS traces it's history back to 1854, along with the girls at Mac.Robertson Girls' High School, and they are considered the First State Secondary Schools in Victoria (of the National Model School).
Although deliberately never considered part of the "private school" system, so to speak, it has the same networking benefits, and it's alumni has a mission of providing broad educational opportunities, with resulting impressive University Entrance stats.
Since it's inception as the "Melbourne Continuation School, with 135 girls and 68 boys" (see wiki -> https://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Melbourne_High_School), and like the Scotch Family, Melbourne High Students and Old Boys look to create strong links with Private Schools to help advance Australian Equal Educational opportunities with Bursaries and Scholarships!

Exploring Inter-Alumni Pastoral Care - Brothers and Sisters...
Presbyterian Ladies' College Melbourne (PLC) was founded in 1875 as one of the first Australian day and boarding schools for girls, close by Scotch College, in East Melbourne, and their school motto is: "Lex Dei Vitae Lampas" (The law of God is the Lamp of Life).
The PLC Family enjoys a active Christian fellowship, and their most famous Old Girl, Dame Nellie Melba, appears on the $100 bill (with Scotch's distinguished son, Sir John Monash, on the reverse side).
"Girls can join many clubs, including equestrian, Duke of Edinburgh, chess, drama, environment, music, debating, literature, SUIS and Amnesty International." (quote -> http://www.resaust.com.au/index.php?p=23_7)
From an early age, Girls are taught confidence and perform regular School and House Concerts. The Drama "highlight of the school calendar" is the Year 9/10 Production in collaboration with Scotch College (quote -> https://www.plc.vic.edu.au/beyond-classroom/performing-arts).
Academically, like Scotch, PLC Graduates enjoy outstanding VCE results, with 8 girls achieving a perfect ATAR score of 99.95, in 2018, and a record median ATAR of 95.75!
As a way of helping women keep in touch with their school, and each other, the PLC Old Collegians' Association (PLCOCA) was formed in 1903, holding branch Events throughout the year across Victoria and Interstate, as well as Overseas in Dubai, Edinburgh, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, London, Singapore, and USA.
Other Pastoral Care Activities include Christian Ministries, 5 Year Reunions (On & Off Campus), Social Media connected PLC/PLCOCA Communications, Women's Health Initiatives, Clubs and Committees, involvement in the Archive and Heritage Centre collections, and participating in Scholarships and Mentoring.
The Scotch and PLC Family enjoy a lasting kindred spirits relationship, recently dining together at an inaugural OSCA and PLCOCA Event in Canberra, at the Commonwealth Club, during July.
"Father God, thank-you for our Sister School! Please bless PLC Students, PLCOCA Old Girls, and greater PLC Family with great wisdom. love, and Advancing Australia education opportunities, by the power of your Holy Spirit. Glory to you God, in Jesus name, Amen!!"

Pastoral Care of Boarders...
Much has been written in Great Scott about the changes in Pastoral Care of Boarders, and many Old Boys have returned to the Boarding School to participate in Old Boys activities.
The Scotch College website summaries "Boarding School Life", and many changes can be noted about life on the Hill, when speaking with our Lads who have sent their sons to Scotch! (https:// www.scotch.vic.edu.au/ admissions/ boarding-school-life.aspx)
Scotch 82 (Class of '82), without fear or trepidation, has posted about the abuse some Boarders experienced during our time as Scotch College students, and we will continue to support all who feel they are benefiting from, and benefiting our, Classmate's Care and Support (using Social Media).
It remains a sensitive subject for some of our Lads, and we acknowledge their ongoing courage in dealing with lingering hurtful-memories, and finding resolution with personal success.
"Father God, thank-you for Old Boys who have had the courage to speak up about their time at Scotch, and in doing so have had the courage to receive Care and Support from their Classmates. Please heal their memories and the associated emotional wounding, by the power of Jesus' love for us and His wounds that purchased our healing. Thank-you God, in Jesus name, Amen!"

Safeguarding Children...
It's become helpful to our Classmates to have an assurance that comprehensive Abuse Prevention measures have been researched and implemented, not just at Scotch, but across our Australian Community!!
This article, authored by Deborah McKenzie, the Program Manager for School Services Programs at the Australian Childhood Foundation (and Safeguarding Children Accrediting Body), explores the behavior a number of our Classmates displayed, whilst at School and/or in Class, and how Teachers are trained to not become Physically Abusive, for instance, (repeatedly) banging a Student's head on a table -> https:// professionals.childhood.org .au/prosody/2017/06/ intro-to-ssp-part-2/

In the History of Pastoral Care at Scotch, Rev James Forbes saw education being "inextricably connected" with the Church/Christianity/ Presbyterianism.
During our time, Philip Roff oversaw a "Widening of the House System", the school being incorporated in 1980, and a New Council appointed "... with representatives from the Presbyterian Church, the Old Scotch Collegians' Association and the community at large.". A School Counselor was also employed.
With Dr Donaldson came enhanced "pastoral care of students", and with the current Principal, Tom Batty, "the introduction of a new House-based pastoral care structure in the Upper School" (See Wikipedia -> https://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/ Scotch_College,_Melbourne#H istory)
The Scotch Family's past and present Parents play a vital role too in Pastoral Care of Students and Staff through various organizations and activities like The Easter Prayer Breakfast and Christmas Carols, as well as Praying with, Supporting, and Caring for The School Chaplains.

Chaplains need Prayer support to cope with the needs they are expected to Minister too, and can attend The Easter Prayer Breakfast as a form of Chaplaincy Care as well as Scotch Family Pastoral Care and Support.

We also have our OSCA (Honourary) Chaplain, Graham Bradbeer, to talk with about Prayer Support, and Graham has been a wonderful Prayer Supporter of our year on a number of aspects of our Social Media related Pastoral Care and Support initiatives.

"A recent note from Phil Vabre ('82)... 'Incidentally, there seem to be quite a few Old Boys from around our era working in the aviation industry. Steve Flynn ('82) also works for Airservices Australia. Over the years, I have run into Adam Porter ('82) and Angus McNabb ('82) who are both flying for the airlines..." Scotch 82 Lads Fellowship at Annual/Branch Dinners, and Club Activities too, including where Men's Mental Health is on the agenda like at the Old Scotch FC!
"The initiative, which came about when he was approached by Old Scotch captain Scott Sherwen late last year, aims to create awareness around mental health issues among the 12,000 young men in the VAFA." (http:// www.thickandthin.com.au/ our-stories-1/)
"... engendered through the strong fellowship which is such a component of the activities of the association's clubs and branches, and is evident of its many activities, such as the Annual Dinner... provides opportunities for Old Boys to keep in contact, is why OSCA exists... and the Association is continuing to explore various platforms to widen it's reach." - Editor of Great Scot, Durga Kamte, on Doug Lording's Presidential thoughts, in the September 2017 Edition -> https://view.joomag.com/ great-scot-the-scotch-famil y-magazine-issue-151-septe mber-2017-greatscot-intern al-sept-2017-fa/ 0927729001504508543
There's more to Scotch 82 than meets the eye:
Whether it be face to face, reading "Great Scot" (digital subscription now available), email, or messaging, Fellowship is important to Scotch 82 Lads, and we'll continue to explore our options for building Community, with no regrets!
You better believe it, Great Scot is still an integral part of our Reconnect, Reconcile, and Reunite Pastoral Care approach, heading towards our next 10 year reunion, The Big One, in 2022!
Did you know that the Old Scotch Collegians' Association has recently introduced a new Youth Organisation called "Young Old BoyS" (YOBS), and that they have their own facebook page -> https://www.facebook.com/oscayobs/
Listen to James Zagame (School Captain 2015) talk about how the YOBS Initiatives are developing, like organizing Get-togethers and Events, and being involved in Mentoring of Old Scotchies -> https://www.facebook.com/oscayobs/videos/1002108256805936/

A (Scotch 82) Suicide Prevention Plan Can Help...
SUICIDE IS PREVENTABLE, and as a Year we are not shy about discussing this extremely important issue for our Year, Old Scotch Collegians' Association, and Scotch Family!
We have Friends who sometimes feel Suicidal and/or have thought and acted on these ideations, so don't hesitate to seek help in helping others, because we must take our Classmates seriously!!
For those of us who may sometimes feel suicidal, then we can make a Safety Plan for the tough times; for when we are feeling low -> https://www.beyondblue.org.au/…/beyondnow-suicide-safety-pl…
Our Scotch 82 Support Influencers may be able to help, or if your are concerned about how to talk to a young Scotchie, then here's an audio "How To Talk About Suicide" that's worth a listen -> https://soundcloud.com/reachoutaus/suicide
Education on the topic is a great idea, and as a Year we are continuing to Speak Up in 2019 for those who feel they have lost their voice, as we head towards our next 10 Year Reunion, in 2022!!

Outside the Scotch Family Help For Abuse Survivors...
Scotch 82 lads, who have opened up about the affect of Abuse, either whilst at Scotch or after engaging with Scotch about abuse, sometimes will need ongoing help from Outside support services, in addition to the limited Care and Support that their classmates are able to provide.

The Blue Knot Foundation (https:// www.blueknot.org.au/) is one such support and help service that understands Survivors, where you can watch videos, use a helpline, and can talk to qualified professionals about a support network approach that your love ones can get involved in too!
Scotch College and OSCA have not informed Scotch 82 Social Media about ongoing Support Groups for Survivors, and nor has a Presbyterian Church Representative, at this stage.
